Bird ownership is a joy; they bring life and vitality to any home. Like any other pet (or even children) owning a bird comes with its share of responsibilities. You are probably familiar with the phrase ‘a canary in a coal mine’. That phrase originates from early coal mining days, where the miners were still feeling out the dangers involved in working coal beds deep underground. One of the most insidious dangers was trapped pockets of methane gas. Methane offered two dangers to the miners, firstly, it was flammable, meaning that the candles and lamps that miners used to see what they were doing would set off explosions that could burn the miners, or set off a collapse that buried them. The other danger was that methane prevents the body from absorbing oxygen; so if the miners started breathing methane, they would eventually suffocate.

The solution they worked out was to bring a canary down in a little bird cage and set it near the work area. They did this because the canary had a lower tolerance for methane gas than humans. This meant that before the methane reached a dangerous level to the miners, the canary would die from it. This was great for the miners but, to understate the situation, it was not so great for the canary.

What does this have to do with bird ownership in modern times? Well, after the initial use of canaries in mining, scientists researched the respiratory system for a wide range of birds, and by and large they were all very susceptible to environmental contaminants. For example, if you are a smoker, it’s not a good idea to keep birds. While tar eventually damages human lungs, it degrades a bird’s health at a much faster rate.

Similarly, while the kitchen is one of the most popular places to put a bird perch or bird cage; one of the most wonderful cooking inventions of the modern era is a death sentence for birds. Teflon is the culprit in an unseemly number of pet bird deaths. It turns out that when Teflon pans are heated, a small amount of Teflon is released into the air. Humans rarely notice this; but it is very deadly to almost all pet birds. Smaller birds such as finches and canaries will die outright, whereas larger birds such as parrots will develop severe health problems when kept in a house near Teflon pans.

That’s just a brush with the most important health issues that face a bird owner. There are also happiness concerns when you own a bird. Many birds, especially the smaller species, are extremely social. They want constant interaction, whether it is with you, the owner, or with other birds. Since most people cannot spend all day with their birds, you may notice that your bird starts engaging in self-destructive behaviors such as feather plucking or excessive screeching. This is a sign of stress, and the simplest solution is for you to have companion birds to keep your bird happy. Some birds will be happy in pairs, where others do better in groups of three or more.

Another thing you can do to make your bird happy is choose suitable bird perches and toys. Birds are extremely smart, and also curious, and getting them a puzzle toy with a treat inside is a great way to keep their mind active and occupied. The best puzzle toys have several solutions that you can change around, which keeps your bird from getting bored of the toy. Thankfully we have bird cages, bird perches, and more at our online pet store, which saves you time and money when shopping for your pets.
